Great text based browsers for use in linux

In this post I will introduce few text based browsers that I use.

w3m

w3m is a text-based web browser for fast browsing that support color. frames, tables, SSL connection along with images.

Use the following command to install in linux

$ sudo yum install w3m  ( on Centos, Fedora or RHEL)
$ sudo apt-get install w3m ( on debian based distros)

Usage

$ w3m www.google.com

elinks

elinks is another great text based browser. This is probably a fully functional browser that can be used to browse all non-graphical websites.

Use the following commands to install in linux

$ sudo yum install elinks  ( on Centos, Fedora or RHEL)
$ sudo apt-get install elinks ( on debian based distros

Usage

Alt+F will pull up the File menu and you can open new tab etc. For those sites that don’t use graphics – this browser is recommended.

Hit Alt+F to bring File Menu

lynx

Lynx is the oldest text-based browser and was available cross platform e.g. windows, unix etc.

Use the following commands to install in linux

$ sudo yum install lynx  ( on Centos, Fedora or RHEL)
$ sudo apt-get install lynx ( on debian based distros

Usage

$ lynx https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynx_browser
